If you've never been on a fitness journey, it's hard to understand what it actually feels like.
Before-and-after photos only show two moments.
They don't show the days you're motivated.
They don't show the weeks where life gets busy.
They don't show the setbacks, the restarts, or the moments where you question if it's even worth continuing.
They don't show the road between where you are today and where you want to be.
That's the part I want to talk about.
I recently shared a video about what the fitness journey actually feels like, and I wanted to put those thoughts into words for anyone who's just starting or trying to get back on track.
Almost every fitness journey starts the same way.
You're motivated.
You decide you want to make a change.
Maybe you want to lose weight, build muscle, or simply feel healthier and more confident.
You start working out, you begin making better choices with your nutrition, and for the first few weeks, everything feels great.
You have more energy. You feel accomplished. You start noticing small changes.
This is the part everyone posts online.
Then life happens.
Work gets busy.
Your schedule changes.
You miss a workout.
Then another.
Maybe your nutrition slips for a few days.
And before you know it, you start telling yourself, "I fell off."
I've been there more than once.
There have been times where my training was consistent, but my nutrition wasn't. I ate too much fast food, too many sweets, and didn't always fuel my body the way I should have. There were also times where life got in the way and my routine wasn't perfect.
For a while, I thought those moments meant I had failed.
Now I know they're just part of the journey.
A fitness journey is not a straight line.
It's a process of learning how to stay committed through different seasons of life.
There will be weeks where everything goes according to plan.
There will also be weeks where work gets busy, motivation fades, and life pulls you away from your routine.
That's normal.
The people who reach their goals aren't the people who never struggle.
Everyone struggles.
The difference is they don't let one bad week turn into a bad month.
They come back.
And honestly, the restart is where the real growth happens.
Every time you come back, you know more than you did before.
You understand what works for you.
You understand which habits actually make a difference.
You become better at handling the challenges that used to stop you.
That's what consistency really means.
It doesn't mean you never miss a workout or eat perfectly every day.
It means you don't quit.
You keep coming back.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that motivation gets you started, but systems keep you going.
Motivation is a great feeling, but it doesn't show up every day.
A simple system does.
Scheduling your workouts before the week starts.
Having a shorter workout for busy days.
Keeping your meals simple instead of chasing the perfect diet.
Those small habits might not seem exciting, but they're what keep you moving forward when motivation fades.
Another lesson I had to learn was that training is only part of the equation.
You can work as hard as you want in the gym, but your results, energy, and recovery will always be influenced by how you fuel your body.
Once I started paying more attention to my nutrition, I noticed a difference in everything.
My workouts improved.
My recovery improved.
My energy improved.
Not because I followed a perfect diet, but because I started making better choices more consistently.
Looking back, I realize the biggest misconception about fitness is believing the journey should be perfect.
It won't be.
You'll miss workouts.
You'll have weekends where your nutrition isn't great.
You'll lose motivation.
None of that means you failed.
It means you're human.
What matters is what you do next.
If you're starting your fitness journey today, or you're getting back after falling off, remember this:
You are not starting from zero.
Every setback teaches you something.
Every restart gives you more experience.
Every small step moves you forward.
The goal was never to be perfect.
The goal is to keep showing up.
The road to building the body you want isn't always easy, but it's worth it.
I recently shared a video about what this journey actually looks like—the ups, the setbacks, and the lessons I wish I knew when I started.
I hope it reminds you that you're not alone in the process.
